Department of Ecology

The Department currently comprises 19 academic staff, four postdoctoral researchers and research officers, 37 postgraduate students, and additional technical and support staff. We focus on modern approaches and tools in molecular, behavioural, community and ecosystem ecology. Research and teaching is supported by excellent laboratory and field facilities, as well as an Entomology Research Museum and a Plant Pathology Unit. The Te Mātāpuna Kaupapa Māori Unit is a unique component of the Ecology Department that provides Maori mentoring and tutoring.

Lincoln University introduced the first ecology course in New Zealand and continues to pioneer advances in this subject, providing practical hands-on experience in land-based applied ecology. Academic staff lead our flagship Bachelor of Science in Conservation and Ecology, and contribute to courses that include Bachelor of Science (Bio-protection and Bio-security), Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology, Bachelor of Environmental Management and Diploma of Agriculture. A large number of students progress to Honours awards and higher degrees (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) within the department. Many others pursue successful careers in the environment sector.
