Agricultural Management

'Agricultural Management' refers to farm management, horticulture management, agribusiness, farming and horticultural systems, rural industry innovation and development, and rural labour and employment.  As such it is a very important part of Lincoln University's mission and its contribution to the international economy and the Government's National Growth Strategy.

A key plank of the New Zealand Growth Strategy is the primacy of agriculture and food processing in achieving growth targets.  New Zealand has plentiful natural resources and it does have a world renowned systems approach to agricultural production and resource management.  Value added and increased performance are ways New Zealand can sustainably deliver greater value from agriculture.  New Zealand also needs verifiable evidence to ensure compliance with environmental standards and its international marketing claims.

The Agriculture Management Group have primary responsibility for much of the BCom(Ag) and BAgrSc Agricultural Management programmes.  Courses in these degrees recognise New Zealand's systems approach to agriculture and horticulture.  The systems approach is fundamental to Lincoln University's programmes in Agricultural Management and hence to much of New Zealand's primary sector.  Thus Lincoln University, through its Agricultural Management Group, is providing the capability needed to boost the contribution of agriculture and agribusiness to New Zealand's National Growth Strategy.

New Zealand is under-resourced in terms of highly qualified personnel in agriculture and related sectors.  To achieve improved economic performance requires additional highly qualified expertise, often at postgraduate level.  Postgraduate study possibilities include BCom(Hons)MAgrSc, MApplSc, MCM, MPS and PhD qualifications.  The Group has a suite of 600 level subjects in Agricultural Management and Agribusiness.

Staff in the group have research interests spanning farm management, horticulture and wine grape systems, international competitiveness of agriculture, agribusiness supply chains, the impact of climate change policies on agriculture, and employment issues in primary industries.

The Group takes a leading role in the delivery of the undergraduate Diplomas in Agriculture and Horticulture.  For three staff (Russell Cameron,  Marv Pangborn and David Shillito), the teaching of diploma students is their major teaching commitment and includes off  campus delivery of undergraduate Diplomas in Agriculture and Horticulture.
