How to use this resource

This Landscape Architecture resource aims to provide secondary school students with an introduction to the discipline of landscape architecture.

It contains information on a number of iconic landscape architecture movements, through a series of short case studies and practitioner biographies on each topic. Each design movement is explored at a range of scales, sighting work from the international and national arenas, and examples of Lincoln university student works. References and web links are provided within each section to give students the tools to carry out further independent research.

The second aim of this resource is to give students the opportunity to carry out a landscape design exercise at a site of their choice.

NCEA Achievement Standards

The materials and exercise contained within this resource enables Landscape Architecture to be taught as part of the NCEA Level 2 Graphics Curriculum. It came about as the widening of the NCEA framework created a need for teachers to access suitable teaching materials in unfamiliar or new disciplines. The exercise in this resource is intended to meet the external Design Achievement Standard, Graphics 90321 - Describe and explain design and its implications for society.

This resource is a pilot project and is intended to be flexible enough to allow teachers and students to use it in conjunction with other Design Achievement Standards, such as 90323 - Design and present a solution for an architectural or environmental brief.  We anticipate this resource will be a foundation to which further material can be added. The graphics teachers who have helped in the development of this teaching package advise that it could easily be adapted for modules within both level 1 and 3 of the graphics curriculum.

Resource format

This resource is divided into two sections, Landscape Architecture Movements and the Student Design Project.

Landscape Architecture Movements: A Research Resource

This resource comprises information on and links to design projects organised into eight significant design themes or movements within landscape architecture.

Student Design Project

This is the students chance to put the information learned into action. Students will carry out the following activities:

  • Individual research
  • Site visit
  • Design response

During this process students may wish to attend a presentation at Lincoln University.

A PowerPoint presentation is available for teachers on CD for those schools outside Canterbury. Please contact Student Recruitment at Lincoln University.

Additional Information:

Teachers wishing to enter their student’s work in the landscape section of the Young Designer Awards  will find the resource material has been designed to fit with the requirements of these Awards.

The structure of this teaching package involves a presentation at the Landscape Architecture School at Lincoln University. Please call or email Student Recruitment or phone 64 3 325 2811 early in the year to arrange a time to visit so we can accommodate your visit within our programme.

We trust the material will be helpful and welcome your suggestions on how to improve the resource. We look forward to hearing from you.
