LASC 216 Site Design

15 Credits

0.125 EFTs

Introduction

This course builds upon the skills and knowledge acquired in LASC 215, to enable students to consolidate a basic design process. This process is explored and refined in a series of small to medium scale projects, that examine the ‘sense of place’ of each site, and considers the needs of site users.

Students are encouraged to develop innovative and expressive design ideas, and communicate those ideas through a range of presentation methods, including models. Different projects will emphasise different areas of practice competence, including planting design, design detailing, and construction drawings.

Topics

There are usually three projects:

  • A shorter project at a smaller scale, usually urban, looking at resolution of spatial patterns and circulation patterns
  • A longer project at a larger scale, looking at regional context issues, and increasing the sophistication of site planning and design decisions
  • A design competition project, looking at an innovative answer to a published competition brief, frequently for the student competition run by the Ellerslie flower show.
