Sporting rivalry going to next level in Uni Battle

11/05/2016 9:30:00 a.m.

Uni Battle 2016 — it’s our own State of Origin to find the top sporting university in the province, and it starts on Friday.

It’s the Canterbury University maroons versus the Lincoln University blues (and yellows), student against student; two institutions with proud sporting traditions testing themselves against each other outside the classroom and the lab, with sweat and passion, and with the eyes of the alumni upon them.

But it’s not just across one sport. The universities will be battling it out on the Avon, on the court and on the turf.

The gladiatorial-like contests start on Kerr’s Reach next Friday as the eights cross blades. Saturday is rugby, with Lincoln’s Metro Division one champion side taking on a high-flying Canterbury team looking to take their crown, as well as a host of up-and-coming sides in a festival of the oval ball, as well as premier men’s basketball, and football. Hockey takes centre stage in a twilight match on Sunday with the women’s match at 6pm, followed by the men’s teams at 7:30pm, keeping the rivalry intense throughout the weekend. Who will be left standing on Monday morning?
