What is Thr3sis?
Thr3sis is a competition for Post-Graduate students where-by students are challenged to answer the question "What are you researching?" in a presentation of no more than three minutes. The three minute presentation is to be pitched at an intelligent but non-academic audience.

Who can enter Thr3sis?
Any registered full or part time PhD or Masters research student who has had their thesis proposal approved is eligible to enter the competition. This includes Lincoln University staff who are studying towards a PhD or Masters qualification.

How does Thr3sis work?
All students entered in the competition will participate in a Faculty or Research Centre specific heat. The top two contestants from each heat (eight finalists in total) will progress to the Grand Final and compete against one another for the grand prize.

What can I win?
The Thr3sis Grand Final winner will be awarded $1000 and an expenses paid trip to Queensland to represent Lincoln University at the Australasian Three Minute Thesis Competition in October. First and second place winners in each of the heats will also be awarded a prize.

What form does the presentation take?

  • Presentations are limited to three minutes maximum, competitors exceeding three minutes will be disqualified
  • A maximum of one PowerPoint slide is allowed (no slide transitions)
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are allowed
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, instruments) are allowed
  • The judging panel decision is final

How will the presentation be judged?

Participants will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Communication style-was the thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?
  • Comprehension- did the presentation help the audience to understand the research?
  • Engagement-did the oration make the audience want to know more?
  • The presentation will not only be marked on what is presented but also the style in which the information is presented. It should be engaging, dynamic and compelling.
