Karate champion top Lincoln sports person

17 September 2003

Commonwealth karate championships 2003 bronze medallist Honor Davies of Christchurch was named Lincoln University's Sport Person of the Year at the University's "Blues and Golds" award ceremony on the campus last night (Wed. 17 Sept.).

A second-year Bachelor of Recreation Management student at Lincoln and a past pupil of Christchurch's Marian College, Honor was selected for the New Zealand Universities Karate Team to travel to the World Universities Karate Tournament in Mexico in 2002 but a knee injury prevented her participation.

Back from knee surgery, Honor was well ranked in the New Zealand nationals this year and took first place in the U21s, under 60kg class.

She has now been selected to attend the Junior World Championships in France later this year.

In addition to winning the Sport Person of the Year title, Honor was also awarded a Lincoln University "blue" in her sport.

Twenty-eight blues were awarded at the ceremony, covering six sports - cricket, hockey, netball, rugby, and table tennis. Six "golds" were also awarded. These are awards for outstanding contributions to club and cultural life at the University. The Sport Team Award went to the Lincoln University Soccer Club.
