23 June 2003

Two Winners in Tertiary Excellence Awards

Lincoln University staff are today [Tuesday, June 24] toasting the outstanding success of their colleagues in national awards for tertiary teaching.

Thirty-four nominations were received for the 2003 Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards and of the nine winners, two were from Lincoln University. Dr Chris Gan, a senior lecturer in Economics and Finance, and Dr Pip Lynch, senior lecturer in Recreation Management, have both collected $20,000. The awards will be used for enhancing their teaching careers and promoting best practice among their colleagues.

Vice Chancellor Dr Frank Wood said the success of both Lincoln University nominees was a coup. "Nominations were received from universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions throughout New Zealand, and for both of our nominees to receive an award is very gratifying."

"These awards demonstrate how highly we value quality teaching. It is easy for Universities to place special emphasis on research at the expense of teaching we ve worked hard to achieve excellence in both roles, and these awards prove that our teaching is equal to our research output.

"It's particularly pleasing to see these awards made in the important areas of commerce and recreation management, which are significant programmes at Lincoln University.

Dr Wood said the awards reflected an investment in supporting excellence in teaching and effective learning for students.

Lincoln University's winners are:

  • Dr Chris Gan has received outstanding evaluations from economics and finance students, since his appointment in 1993. His lectures are known for their inclusive and thoughtful atmosphere and he devotes many hours outside class time to help students to improve their learning.
