Linguistics graduate wins Lincoln’s JADE Prize

23 September 2003

From the language of humankind to the language of the computer, linguistics graduate Anton Melser, now a Bachelor of Applied Computing student at Lincoln University, has won this year s JADE Prize of $2000.

The JADE Prize, presented annually at Lincoln University by Christchurch-based JADE Software Corporation, is for the top student in Lincoln's 300-level class Object-Oriented Programming.

Lecturer Elizabeth Post described Anton as a "clear winner" among a lot of competition and the Director of the Division at Lincoln responsible for the Applied Computing degree, John Lay, said he was an outstanding student with tremendous potential.

Presenting the prize on behalf of JADE Software Corporation, Higher Education Manager Keith Cowan reminded Anton that computers were only a means to an end and "it is up to the unique individual to make them do what they are capable of."

Anton, who is Vice-President this year of Lincoln University Students Association, plans to go into the IT industry in the immediate future, but given his linguistics background - a BA Honours degree from Victoria University - he says he might one day look at work in natural language programming.

This is the fifth year JADE Software Corporation has presented an Applied Computing class prize at Lincoln University.
