Lincoln supports new tertiary steps

27 July 2006

Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor Professor Roger Field supports the tenor of the steps announced today (27 July) by Tertiary Education Minister Michael Cullen in the Government’s new direction for the tertiary sector.

“There can be no disputing the benefits of enhancing the quality of the New Zealand university system,  its research, postgraduate education and research-led teaching,” says Professor Field.

“It is critical in a small country such as New Zealand to support the notion of distinctive contributions by sectors and institutions to the delivery of quality educational outcomes that are of direct value to future prosperity and growth.

“In Lincoln University’s case, the signalled changes will allow us to enhance our focus on the distinctive and fundamental contribution that we have been making for 128 years to New Zealand’s economic and social goals.

“Lincoln University looks forward to re-stating its distinctive contribution and, in particular, supporting the further development of agriculture and other industry-focused education and research provision.

“There are many possible benefits to students, employers and the New Zealand economy that will flow from the successful implementation of the current proposals.”
