Science Fair entries ‘well up’ on last year

10 August 2006

The future of science is in good hands with the number of entries in this weekend’s Lincoln University Canterbury-Westland Science and Technology Fair well up on last year, says event organiser Gordon McNabb.

“Over 330 individual entries will be on display for judging and public viewing at the Christchurch Convention Centre on Sunday and Monday, an increase of almost 15 percent on 2005.

“More schools have entered this year than last year too and science is definitely on a roll with many schools now running their own mini-fairs and selecting the best of their exhibitors to go forward to this major event.

“A wide variety of topics are covered by the entrants - some very novel and ingenious - and the standard goes on improving year after year,” says Mr McNabb.

“While there is a wide range of ages competing against one another, the students’ exhibits are all judged on the same criteria which means a Year 7 student has as much chance of winning the Best in Fair award as a Year 13 entrant.”

This annual event is organised by Christchurch Kiwanis clubs, Canterbury Science Teachers’ Association and other interested parties. Lincoln University is the principal sponsor.

Judging is in the morning of Sunday 13 August, then the fair is open to the public in the afternoon and during the day on Monday 14 August.
