Changing jobs and moving cities is now relatively commonplace among today’s managers, as is the need for continuous professional development. To deal with these, sometimes conflicting, realities can be a challenge but Lincoln University’s Executive Development Programme (EDP) has the answer.
“Lincoln’s EDP is designed for those in full-time employment – it allows people to study when they want, where they want” says Ivo Wynn-Williams, Manager of the EDP.
The EDP is an advanced management programme aimed as those in full-time work. It is studied part-time and off-campus. Students work from a comprehensive set of printed and web-based course materials, backed up by periodic face-to-face tutorials in the major centres in New Zealand.
The tutorials form a vital part of the learning process by enabling participants to interact with each other and with the subject presenter.
“There’s no doubt that face-face contact with our staff is a major advantage for students,” says Mr Wynn-Williams. “It provides them with the advice and support they need to make the most of the material they’re working on between facilitation sessions. Students are telling us it makes a big difference to the success of their studies.”
The EDP offers subjects such as Project Management and Marketing Management on a stand-alone basis or as part of a postgraduate qualification such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Commerce or Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce or the flagship Master of Professional Studies degree.
Unlike many MBAs the Master of Professional Studies offers the opportunity to focus on a range of industry specialisations– Agribusiness Management, Environmental Management, Forest Industry Management, and Transport Management. “The specialisations allow students to build upon their existing industry knowledge and experience,” says Mr Wynn-Williams.
Students can, however, pursue a generic version of the Master of Professional Studies that is built around a number of business management subjects.

Lincoln course ‘played major role’ in top executive’s career path
Sean Bolt, Chief Executive of Toll Owens Ltd graduated Master of Professional Studies in Transport Management at this year’s Lincoln University Graduation Ceremony. He was one of a select group of 11 from a variety of employment fields who received the Master of Professional Studies degree.
Here’s what he has to say about the MPS programme
“In aspiring to senior positions it is imperative that, along with appropriate industry experience, one can bring to the job certain generic skills from a number of disciplines.
“Lincoln University’s Master of Professional Studies programme offers those generic skills while at the same time allowing the student to obtain specialist skills in a particular field of interest.
“With application on the part of the student, the course imparts those skills admirably, and the flexibility of the programme does not preclude a balanced approach to home, work and study.
“The balance of academic and industry practitioners results in relevant course material.
“I have not doubt that my study through Lincoln University has played a major role in my career path over the past few years. I recommend to anyone considering postgraduate work that they seriously consider the Lincoln University Master of Professional Studies programme.
