NZ representative honours for Lincoln students

04 July 2007

Three Lincoln University students, all Cantabrians, all Lincoln University Sports Scholars and all studying for Bachelor of Commerce and Management degrees have been selected for the New Zealand universities team to compete at the World University Games in Thailand in August.

The three are  -  first year student Georgia Goulding, who will represent New Zealand in soccer, and third year students Rodney Yee and Dean Cameron who will be in the golf team.

Also competing internationally are three Lincoln University rowers  who will be up against Australian university representatives in three regattas in New Zealand in July. They are Mark Haywood, Warwick Wright and Ben Bell.

The University is making a funding contribution towards the international representative efforts of all six students and they will be hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roger Field, to a morning tea function in the VC’s lounge on 7 July, when cheques will be presented.

Representation by Lincoln students at the World University Games is rare although many of the University’s students compete internationally as team members or individuals in other levels of  world competition. For example, Lincoln University’s 2003 Sports Person of the Year, Honor Davies, won a bronze meal at a Junior World Karate Championships; the 2005 Sports Person of the Year, Meredith Orr, was a member of the NZ Women’s Hockey team at the Sydney Olympic Games; and various Lincoln University students have represented New Zealand in world championships in women’s cricket, under-19  rugby and other sports.
