University Blues for Lincoln University Sportswomen

19 August 2008

Kendra Cocksedge, from Taranaki, has risen to the top in three sporting codes – rugby, sevens, and cricket.   In rugby she plays at halfback for the Black Ferns and she also represents her country in Sevens. In cricket she was recently selected for the New Zealand A team, although she’s been forced to withdraw to focus on her rugby commitments.

Now in the second year of Bachelors in Recreation Management and Sport, Kendra is working towards a Major in exercise and health.  She says it’s an excellent programme which is sure to open many doors.

Amy Satterthwaite was a member of the New Zealand A team for two years before being picked for the White Ferns in 2007 for their away tour to Australia and England, and the return series here in New Zealand in February and March.  Now working as a veterinary technician, with one paper to complete, the Christchurch-based all rounder (right-arm bowler, left-arm bat) is aiming for a spot in the team to compete in next year’s World Cup, in Australia.   It’s a contest that could go to either of the top four teams.

This year’s Lincoln University recipients say the award reflects a positive study experience at tertiary level.

“I’ve certainly been fortunate to learn in a place that’s flexible and willing to support people to continue playing sport at the top level,” says Amy Satterthwaite.  “Being at a smaller university is definitely a plus.   The lecturers were all really good and gave me plenty of help to reach my goals both on and off the sports field.”

Based on the traditional Blue of Oxford and Cambridge, New Zealand University Blues are awarded by University Sport New Zealand to students who have achieved all-round excellence.  Since the awards were established in 1934, more than 2500 sportsmen and women have been recognised in this way.

Previous recipients include Ferns captain Farah Palmer, Olympic gold medallist Danyon Loader, and rowing champions Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell.

Lincoln University’s achievements have been significant.  Recent recipients include All Black captain Richie McCaw;  All Blacks Scott Robertson Andy Ellis, White Fern Amy Mason, and current Black Stick Jo Gallately.
