Sport is playing a big fundraising role for Christchurch earthquake relief and hockey supporters can get behind this inter-university event on Saturday 12 March.

Lincoln and Canterbury universities have dedicated one of their three scheduled hockey matches in Christchurch this weekend as an Earthquake Charity Match, with money raised going to the Red Cross Earthquake Fund.

The match is at Nunweek Hockey Park, Wooldridge Road, at 4.00pm on Saturday 12 March. It will be a star-studded encounter with Junior Blacksticks members, Canterbury Cavaliers, Canterbury Under-21 representatives and Lincoln University Sports Scholars among the players.

The game is part of a three-match series between the two universities and it was the brainchild of students from both sides to turn it into an earthquake fundraiser.

There will be donation boxes at the ground, spot prizes, sporting celebrities from the Canterbury region, a barbecue and halftime entertainment, and money will be donated for each goal scored.

“Both sides are determined to win and gain pride for their university,” says Lincoln University sport and recreation management student Mitchell Hayde.
