Landscape links with renowned artist

19 October 2011

Lincoln University acknowledges the immense contribution to New Zealand art and culture of Canterbury-born painter Austen Deans, who died in Christchurch on 18 October, aged 96.

A descendant of the well-known Canterbury pioneering family, Austen Deans had a keen love of the outdoors, which is reflected in many of his paintings. As an enthusiastic mountaineer he climbed many of the country’s major peaks.

Deans family connections with Lincoln University range over several generations and Austen Deans is represented in the Lincoln University Art Collection through a number of his landscape works, including Mesopotamia, painted in 1953 and shown here.
