Vice-Chancellor Professor Roger Field on behalf of Lincoln University joins the nation in congratulating the All Blacks on their Rugby World Cup win over the weekend. Lincoln University is thrilled to have close connections with three of the current All Black team members.
“Lincoln University has a strong rugby tradition” says Professor Roger Field. “In the 1987 Rugby World Cup squad we had four ex-students – Craig Green, Albert Anderson, Andy Dalton and Bruce Deans. Now we have Richie McCaw, Sam Whitelock and Andy Ellis on the winning Rugby World Cup team 24-years later”.
This is a very proud moment for Peter Magson, Recreation Centre and Sports Scholarship Manager, with Richie McCaw, Sam Whitelock and Andy Ellis benefiting from the Lincoln University Sports Scholarship programme. “This demonstrates the quality of the Sports Scholarship programme at the University, particularly our rugby programme with its close connections to the Canterbury Rugby Union, as a spring-board into our national sporting teams” says Magson.
“Lincoln University celebrated 130-years of rugby this year with a series of reunions for past players and alumni throughout New Zealand. With next year’s Sports Scholarship intake underway maybe we will have a few more players with Lincoln University connections in the 2015 Rugby World Cup squad” Magson suggests.
