Award winning sports scholar hoping to join elite

21/03/2017 1:30:00 p.m.

Only two years after taking to the track, cyclist and Lincoln Sports Scholar Kate Smith already has a World Championship medal in her trophy cabinet.

A former triathlete, she focused her sporting future on her bike.

“I realised I was much better at cycling than swimming and running and also cycling runs in the family”

She started road cycling when she started high school at Christchurch Girls and started racing on the track in Year 12.

Last year the Commerce student was named in the New Zealand Junior Track Cycling team for the Junior World Championships in Switzerland where she won a silver medal in the team pursuit.

She was also successful at the Oceania Track Cycling Champs in Melbourne, bringing home a silver medal in the pursuit, and a gold in the team pursuit.

These achievements led to her being named Junior Sportswoman of the Year at the recent Canterbury Sports Awards.
Next for Kate are this year’s Junior World Track Championships in China, but she has her aim set high for the future.

“Looking further on I would like to make the NZ Elite Track Squad and hopefully attend some World Cup events or Commonwealth Games.”
