Top Lincoln sportsman spending summer among elite

13/10/2016 1:30:00 p.m.

Lincoln’s newly named Sportsperson of the Year, Sam Bosworth, is looking forward to a busy summer after moving into the top level of his sport.

He has been named as a coxswain in the elite summer rowing squad, and hopes to go on from there to claim selection for next year’s world championship campaigns at the helm of the men’s eight.

Sam, from Waipara, claimed the Lincoln award last month after coxing the men’s U23 four to victory in the world champs in Rotterdam, which he calls the highlight of his sporting career so far.

It followed a slew of silvers with different crews in previous years.

The globe-trotting sportsman is finishing his degree in environmental planning and then it’s onto summer camp at Cambridge from October until February with the elite rowers.

He is on a sports scholarship and Prime Minister’s Scholarship and is grateful to a bevy of sponsors and supporters who have helped him get to this stage in his career, as well as previous coaches who have mentored him over the years and the many athletes he has coxed.

He started the sport while at school at Christ’s College and has moved from the cox’s seat to the coaching boat there.

Steering might be an obvious part of the job, but so is strategy and man–management, he says, and they are the aspects he enjoys the most. There are the traditional roles of bringing out the oars and doing odd-jobs, but he “loves the racing”, so it is all worthwhile.
