The Centre for Viticulture and Oenology (V&O) acts as a focus for interdisciplinary research on wine, from soil to glass.
Latterly, there has been a strong (but not exclusive) emphasis on Pinot noir. In part this is a reflection of the interest in this grape variety, particularly by New World wine producers attempting to emulate the classic styles represented in Burgundy. Also, Lincoln University's geographical position is such that it is close to the wine regions which appear to be best suited to Pinot noir production in New Zealand; Central Otago, Waipara, Marlborough and Martinborough. The objectives of the research centre are:
- To increase value to the New Zealand wine industry through improved understanding of the relationships between environment, viticultural practices and wine quality.
- To provide the expertise required by New Zealand as a producer of high quality wine by training people with innovative vineyard management, wine-making and wine business skills.
- To become an internationally recognised centre for research associated with Pinot noir.
- To develop expertise in research on the social and cultural aspects of wine production and consumption.
- To create research synergies and enhance research output through an interdisciplinary approach to viticulture and wine oriented research.
