Lincoln University Rugby

After a 13 year hiatus, rugby returned to Lincoln University in 2009.  The University is very pleased to have rugby back on campus after this prolonged absence and to begin re-building the long tradition it has enjoyed as a successful rugby club.  This success incorporates a large number of regional and national representative players amongst its alumni, including famous All Black captains such as Sir Wilson Whineray (an honorary Vice-President of the newly formed LU Rugby Club), Andy Dalton, Ruben Thorne and a vast number of All Blacks (DOC 15 KB) who have been involved in Lincoln University Rugby. Our latest All Black is current student Sam Whitelock.

The Lincoln University Rugby Club plays in the Christchurch Metropolitan Rugby Competition and fields teams in Senior Division 1 and 2 as well as the Colts Premier and Under 20 Colts Reserve grades.  Aside from focusing on success in terms of results on the field, the LU Rugby Club is also convinced that the social side of sporting involvement is something that contributes to the physical and emotional health of our students.  The University rugby and netball clubs hold many joint social gatherings which are particularly popular amongst the students.

2011

The 2011 season has been a very memorable one for many reasons. We have all been subjected to Mother Nature’s full force with the series of tragic and disastrous earthquakes as well as two widespread snowfalls throughout the region that thankfully did not cause too much disruption in the sporting world.

In between these events there has been some outstanding rugby played by our club members. In just three short years since reforming LURFC on campus our sides have achieved their best results in decades. The 2011 end of season reports can be seen here at the latest sporting news
