Supervisory Research Teams

The Supervisory Research Team works with students in identifying goals and monitoring progress throughout the life of the project.

Lincoln's relatively small size means that students benefit from frequent contact with their supervisors, co-supervisors, associates and where appropriate, off-campus scientists and industry practitioners.

New students should refer to the Supervision: Mutual Expectations. It outlines the guidelines for discussion between the supervisor(s) and the postgraduate student.

Research Support

Excellent research facilities are available for students.

Direct research funding is provided for all thesis and dissertation students, once a formal research proposal is approved.

There is a large and diverse range of scholarships available.

The University actively supports research students attending international conferences.

Research Organisations

The campus is at the centre of a cluster of government research organisations such as Crop and Food Research, Landcare Research, AgResearch, HortResearch, Foundation for Arable Research and Canesis.

Lincoln has close professional and scientific ties with research bodies throughout New Zealand and the world, as distant as Norway and California.

Research organisations such as these provide important research opportunities and knowledge for students in their field of study.

Student Learning Centre

The Student Learning Centre provides many services and workshops to assist with:

  • Writing at postgraduate level and preparing for thesis or dissertation research
  • Designing experiments and surveys, analysing data (including using statistical packages),writing a research proposal and applying for ethics approval
  • Searching effectively for information, managing it, references, your time and the research process

These include:

  •  An in-house research support meeting for PG students
  • On-going one-on-one or small group research database support
  • Study rooms for group work
  • An inter-loan service where postgraduate students can request items to supplement material not held in the library
  • Access to Canterbury University library resources
  • Access to more than 16,000 journals with e-access.

Postgraduate conferences

All postgraduate students are expected to attend the annual  postgraduate conference which is run jointly by students and staff.

This aims to improve learning and research habits and challenge postgraduates to think outside the square.

Lincoln University Students Association

There is a Postgraduate Officer on the Lincoln University Students Association (LUSA) executive.

The Postgraduate Officer provides a voice for postgraduate students within the student association and works to facilitate communication between postgraduate students, the University and LUSA.

House Rules

There are House Rules handbooks for each level of postgraduate study from Graduate Certificates through to PhDs.

The handbooks guide postgraduate students through the requirements of their course of study.  The handbooks include information on a variety of areas such as intellectual property, examination procedures, and research ethics.

Postgraduate students receive a handbook when they enrol at Lincoln University.
