Teaching and Learning Services aims to enhance the professional development of all staff. We offer workshops and seminars for both general and academic personnel. In addition, we consult with individuals and departments to customise learning systems so that staff take charge of their own learning and professional development. Learning need not be confined to a formal situation, in fact, if lessons learned in a formal training are not put directly into practice within 36 hours, they rarely become part of our usual practice.
Within the university community, we recognise a wide array of expertise within each department and position. In the future we hope to invoke subject matter experts on campus to share their expertise. One proven strategy is to join with colleagues and share your knowledge. Professionals who are passionate about their profession have done this for eons. Our own understanding, for example, is certainly clarified when we explain a process to a newer staff member. This is especially true, for instance, with explanations of software functions.
One of the most effective ways to promote learning is to see learning as a continuous process where each day provides an opportunity to put something new into practice. Knowles (1990) indicate that adults prefer to take initiative and responsibility for their own learning. There is no substitute for personal goal setting for expanding your professional competency one day at a time and joining with others who share your practice.
