Student evaluations

Student evaluations have become an important ingredient in the quality mechanisms of LU and are an important part of TLS staff development work. Our aim is make the student evaluation process effective by offering a service that is convenient to staff and to keep participation rates high.

Student Evaluations serve a dual purpose:

  1. To provide you with feedback on the teaching & learning happening in your class and,
  2. To allow you to document your achievements should you wish to apply for promotion on the basis of your teaching.

Standard lecturer evaluation

Lecturer evaluations are voluntary. Students are asked to provide feedback on questions that ask about the organisation of classes, the clarity in which the material is presented, assessment, and the lecturer's willingness to provide help. In addition, open-ended questions provide students with the opportunity to comment on various aspects of teaching. Special evaluation forms have also been developed for tutors and studio teachers. You will need to provide evidence from recent lecturer evaluations if you wish to apply for promotion on the basis of your teaching.

Standard subject evaluation

Subject evaluations are compulsory. Each subject must be evaluated biannually. Students are asked to provide feedback on questions that ask about subject content, teaching methods, the availability and helpfulness of instructional resources and assessment issues. A copy of the results of each subject evaluation are sent to the lecturer's Head of Division.

Classes with fewer than 20 students

Standard lecturer evaluation forms are recommended for use in classes with 20 or more students. For smaller classes we recommend the use of a facilitated interview. Teaching & Learning staff will facilitate a group discussion so students can provide feedback about the subject and/or lecturer. The results of the evaluation will be in the form of comments recorded at the interview.
