The Cisco SSL VPN client application allows staff and postgraduate students using non-Lincoln University computers/laptops to connect to certain Lincoln University resources from off campus or on campus via the Guest or Wireless networks.
As a minimum you can manually connect to your H: and S: drives and the Uniflow printers. Some departments may make other resources available to you via the SSL VPN.
Installation instructions
If you already have the client installed on your computer, go to the Cisco SSL VPN client operating instructions page to learn how to connect with it.
Uninstallation instructions
You can use the usual Programs | Uninstall a program to remove the SSL VPN client.
Important requirements
- Requires Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit), with firewall, Anti-virus (AV) and Windows Updates turned on
- Installation requires Admin rights
- When connected to the Lincoln VPN ALL your traffic will flow through the VPN. The only way of accessing Internet sites is via the Lincoln Proxy server. You are recommended to configure your web browser to Automatic proxy configuration. All Internet traffic through the proxy server is logged.
- You may find other programs on your computer will not operate correctly – particularly those that require a direct Internet connection.
- You should only use the Lincoln VPN when required. Disconnect after use.
Other notes:
- The SSL VPN solution consists of a custom Lincoln security checker and the Cisco SSL VPN client. The security checker runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7. It does NOT run on Windows XP.
- Windows users must have AV, a firewall and Windows updates configured. For the custom security checker you must have at least .NET framework v2 installed for the checker to run. Most PCs will. You will be unable to connect without three green lights – ie firewall on, AV on and Windows updates enabled.
- The Windows Security Center service must be running on Vista and Windows 7 machines. Windows 7 users: If you get three red lights but all seems to check out you may need to wait a couple of minutes and try again or alter the Windows Security Center service startup type from Automatic (delayed start) to just Automatic– see below.
- When connected ALL your network traffic will flow via Lincoln. This means if you want external internet access, you will need to configure your web browser for either automatic proxy detection or specifically configure it for wwwproxy.lincoln.ac.nz. Alternatively limit your traffic to Lincoln only sites. Also you will be using the Lincoln internal DNS servers during your VPN session.
- For security reasons you will NOT be able to establish an SSL VPN connection if you have fast user switching enabled AND there is another user logged into the PC at the same time. You will get a warning.
