Lincolnuni email

Lincolnuni email is a Windows Live account customised for Lincoln University students. Students receive a mailbox on the next business day following completion of their first registration.  Windows Live is a fully web based service, includes a 10 Gb mailbox, calendar, contact management, as well as 25 Gb ‘SkyDrive’.  It is accessible from almost any web browser on or off campus, and is an official University communication channel with students.

This service is available to all students, both undergraduate and post graduate.

Mailbox addresses

Student mailbox addresses are in the form FirstName.LastNameNumber@lincolnuni.ac.nz, where Number is present only if required to differentiate a mailbox from other pre-existing mailboxes.  The Mailboxes continue forever even after your lincoln account has been disable/deleted.

Don't know what my email address is?

If you have finished enrolling and don't know what your email address is log into the Lincoln University Network using the username and password you where given.  Once you have done this a System Notice will appear, under the word Welcome you should see your email address displayed.

Passwords for your mailbox

When a login password is changed, this also updates the mailbox password so they remain synchronised.  Use only letters and numbers in your login password, as some other characters cause the password synchronisation process to fail.  Changing mailbox password from within the Webmail application is not recommended, as the login and mailbox passwords will then remain unsynchronised until the login password is next changed.

Setting up your email account

The first time a new mailbox is accessed, the user is asked to set up Secret Questions as a secure mechanism for resetting a forgotten mailbox password.

Access to this is via the ‘My Student Email’ link (top right) from the student intranet home page http://learn.lincoln.ac.nz.

How to access your email account

The mailbox can be accessed in the following recommended ways:

  1. Click the Student Webmaillink in Moodle http://learn.lincoln.ac.nz.
  2. http://webmail.lincolnuni.ac.nz/
  3. Go to http://outlook.com/ or http://hotmail.com.  Enter the mailbox address, in the form :firstname.lastname@lincolnuni.ac.nz, and Lincoln network password.A number of options will be presented. Click on Mail on the top row.

On line help for Windows Live is extensive and includes getting started, mailbox rules, chat, email client software setup and working with attachments http://help.outlook.com

The system is hosted off-campus at a Microsoft Data Centre, outside the control of Lincoln University.  As such, the system is subject to the laws and regulations of foreign jurisdictions, and in theory, data in the system could be subpoenaed. To mitigate the risk, critically sensitive information could be encrypted before being sent, or kept away from the system.

Connecting Outlook Live to your preferred email program

The new student email system uses an excellent webmail client called Outlook Live, and ITS recommend that you use this to send and receive your lincolnuni email. Outlook Live is available either via the student homepage (http://student.lincoln.ac.nz) then selecting the link to My Student Email, or by visiting http://outlook.com/ - you will need your Lincoln email address and your current network password to use outlook.com.

Lincoln University cannot provide individual support configuring stand-alone email clients to send and receive lincolnuni.ac.nz email, so please don't ask. ITS recommend you use the Outlook Live webmail client.

However, for users who prefer to access their email with POP or IMAP rather than the recommended Outlook Live solution, the following link should assist you or a knowledgeable friend to configure your email client to send and receive lincolnuni email using a standalone email client on your own private Windows or Mac PC, at home, or on the University Guest, Wireless and Residential (ResNet) networks.
