Free wireless access to the Internet and selected Lincoln resources is available throughout the Library, at Mrs O’s, Commerce Foyer and anywhere else you see the Lincoln University hotspot sign. The network is open access requiring no special security settings and is the sort of network you would find in a coffee shop or other commercial wireless hotspot. This makes it easy to connect, just look for the LincolnHotspot network on your list of wireless networks when you are in range.
Important: as it is an open wireless network you need to make sure you take the same security precautions as you would on the Internet. These include:
- You have a personal firewall switched on
- Leaving the wireless connection switched off until you actually need it; - safer that way and also saves battery life
- Taking care when opening attachments from people you don’t know and
- Not accepting any digital certificates you may be presented with when browsing a supposedly trusted site like a bank – it could be a phishing attack or a man in the middle attack
- You can also user EDUcation ROAMing (EDUROAM)
Note that the performance of a wireless network is affected by the number of users connected to any given wireless access point and your location in relation to the access point. So if you are in the library standing in between rows of metal shelving, for example, this will affect your connection! ITS also recommends that you invest in a laptop lock and use it - especially in areas like the Library.
