Privacy and Confidentiality

At Lincoln University we take all reasonable precautions regarding your privacy and all confidential matters in relation to Student Health and Support, and Inclusive Education.

Student Health and Support Privacy
Student information held at Student Health and Support is private and confidential.

Student Health and Support staff are bound by the rules of the Health Information Privacy Code and the Health Act.

Where more than one professional at Student Health and Support is managing a student’s care or support needs, relevant information may be routinely shared between those team members, with the permission of the student. This ensures the team works together to provide the student with the best possible outcome.

Inclusive Education Confidentiality
It is the policy of Inclusive Education to protect the confidentiality of the information about your health or impairment that we collect. Inclusive Education complies with the Health Information Privacy Code (1994), including the sections pertaining to the collection, storage, disclosure of and access to any personal information gathered in the course of dealing with you.

General rule
As a general rule, health information will only be disclosed to other people if you have authorised the disclosure. It will be held securely at Inclusive Education, and will be available only to authorised Inclusive Education staff.

When you register with Inclusive Education, we discuss what information you are happy to disclose, and who it can be disclosed to. Usually, this will be the information that enables other staff to make the appropriate arrangements and accommodations to lessen the impact of your disability, illness or injury.

We only share specific information about your health or impairment if you have agreed.

When we share written information with other people, we will copy this to you as well.

The Health Information Privacy Code gives you a number of rights, including the following:

  • The right to access personal information held about you
  • The right to correct personal information held about you

Exceptions
There are exceptions to the general rule in certain circumstances, such as when there are serious concerns for your safety or the safety of others, or when there is a legal duty to provide health information.

Sharing information with others
In order to enable us to provide you with the best possible service, there are some circumstances when relevant information may be shared with other professional staff within Lincoln University (e.g. Student Health and Support).
