Alexa Bennett

Bachelor of Commerce and Management

Bachelor of Commerce and Management graduate Alexa Bennett says a cricket scholarship from Lincoln University helped boost both her degree and her sport.

Alexa, who played cricket at both club and Canterbury under-21 representative levels, says while Lincoln’s training facilities helped develop her talent on the cricket field, balancing her sport and degree benefited her in the classroom.

“The sports scholarship kept me busy and active, and I found that I was more productive in my studies that way. The access to all of Lincoln’s sports facilities was a major benefit too. We practically had trainers on tap and could utilise the fantastic gym and NZ Cricket High Performance Centre,” she says.

Currently living in Melbourne, Alexa is a sales cadet for The Age newspaper. As part of her Fairfax graduate program, she is able to work in various advertising departments over a one-year period, giving her experience in different roles with the paper.

Alexa says her BCM from Lincoln gave her a well-rounded approach to the business and marketing industries.

“My degree at Lincoln really allowed me to grasp the business fundamentals and provided a practical aspect to test and apply my theory,” she says. “In one of my classes, we worked with a real-life client to prepare a hypothetical marketing plan - that was a great way to gain a feel for the industry.”

It wasn’t until Alexa’s second year that she discovered a love for marketing.

“I realised that I really enjoyed the marketing aspect of my degree, so I selected papers that would lead me into that kind of career. One of my favourite papers focused largely on how cross-cultural differences affect business, and I found that really fascinating in a marketing context,” she says.

Alexa was part of a student exchange programme in her fourth year, studying at New York’s Cornell University, and received a Graduate Diploma in Commerce & Management.

She describes her time studying at Lincoln University as “110 percent positive”, and says the friendly and supportive learning environment is ideal for tertiary study
