Jia Liu

Bachelor of Commerce, Transport & Logistics

When Jia Liu decided she wanted to study for a career in transport and logistics, Lincoln University was the only tertiary institution in the South Island to offer her the type of degree she wanted.

Now working for the Mediterranean Shipping Company as a national import data transmission exchange (DTX) officer, Jia says Lincoln’s Bachelor of Commerce (Transport & Logistics) gave her the skills and confidence to launch her career in a global industry.

“In my third year, as well as knowledge relevant to my career, I gained valuable practical skills that have assisted me on a daily basis in my work. Being able to work quickly and efficiently alongside others and take up leadership when necessary is vital in the real world,” she says.

Originally from China, Jia says she feels secure knowing her skills are employable in New Zealand or overseas, giving the flexibility to travel and work between countries if she wants.

“Travel and logistics is growing popular as a career choice in China, and it’s nice to know that, if I wanted to, I could go back over there and continue applying my skills. The fact that I work within a very global industry allows for a lot of flexibility with where I choose to work,” she says.

As a DTX officer, Jia works within the imports department to ensure shipping data is correctly entered into the company’s logistics system for every container on board. She is frequently in contact with overseas agents to investigate manifest and freight collector queries, as well as maintaining the customer database, and the information she verifies is relied upon by various other departments within the company.

Jia says she is currently considering returning to Lincoln part-time to focus her studies on the shipping industry.

“I loved my time at Lincoln. I made so many friends, especially from other nationalities. There are lecturers I still keeping touch with, and I am thinking about returning to complete post-grad study in the near future,” she says.
