Bachelor of Science with Honours First Class (major in animal science/genetics)
Now Livestock Analyst, Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC)
“Farming, animals, and groundbreaking science all interest me so I knew Lincoln was for me, as they shine in this field of research”, says Amy Horrell. “Being selected as a netball scholar also had a bearing on choosing Lincoln as this meant free fees, and also created a healthy balance of sport and study throughout my time at Lincoln, which I found to be very beneficial.”
“I was lucky enough to get a scholarship with LIC in my honours year and was contracted to work for them for a month, a fantastic opportunity to get a really good feel for the company and to get your name out there.” However, her success wasn’t just luck as she soon will be promoted to Sire Proving Scheme Manager at LIC.
She says it is important to read the careers section in the newspapers to find out where the jobs are. “If you can, try and get some student work in the company you are interested in over the summer holidays. Have a good chat to your teacher/lecturer about what degrees are good bases for what jobs and spend the time and effort applying for scholarships, there are a lot out there.”
Amy had a great time at Lincoln and recommends students to get involved in as much as they can while at university: “You’ll pick up skills all the time that will be useful once you start working.” She says she also enjoyed the small classes, the helpful staff, the field trips and hands on learning/practical experience, the relaxed culture set in a great setting, the fantastic facilities such as the library and gym, the sports culture and the awesome people/students who make Lincoln what it is!
