Diploma in Horticulture

Alisdair Bennett says the practical aspect of his Diploma in Horticulture opened the door to his current work.

As part of his diploma, Alisdair undertook several weeks of work experience at Southern Woods Tree Nursery in Christchurch, and says it paid off in a big way.

“About a month before I finished my studies, I received a call from the manager offering me full-time employment. Through Lincoln University, I was able to apply my knowledge in the industry and subsequently get myself a job straight after my diploma. That was a great result,” he says.

Alisdair says studying a one-year diploma appealed to him much more than a longer-term qualification, and says his studies provided him with a solid grounding in horticulture, while at the same time offering a broad overview of what to expect in the industry.

He currently works as part of the crop-care team for Southern Woods, taking the small plants after the propagation process and ensuring their nutrition and health is optimal for growth.

“I really enjoyed the plant science aspect during my studies at Lincoln, and it’s great to be able to utilise that learning in my work,” he says.

Alisdair says the personal learning environment at Lincoln and friendly campus were highlights of his time there, and he is considering returning to complete postgraduate studies in horticulture.

“Some of the most memorable aspects of my diploma are the people I was studying with. The friendliness of the people at Lincoln has left a lasting impression,” he says
