Master of Environmental Policy
Ministry for the Environment
I entered the MEP after working in the fields of engineering and environmental management. The MEP provided an opportunity to learn about environmental policy at all levels. The choice of papers allowed me to build a broad understanding of the policy process: from the frameworks, tools and practices used in developing and implementing policy as well as an appreciation of the environmental and political context in which it happens.
I now work at the Ministry for the Environment. My role at the Ministry involves developing policy and working with industry organisations to encourage sustainable business practice. My focus areas include waste policy, contaminated site remediation and sustainable land management. I have found public policy a rewarding area to work.
Employers value the perspective that graduates from the degree possess. Coming from an engineering background, I already had a good understanding for the ways in which science and economics can be applied to problems but the degree gave me a much better appreciation of the strengths and limitations of these approaches and an understanding of the other perspectives, knowledge and skills needed to address complex environmental issues.
