Bachelor of Agricultural Science
Ashley Nicholson says the practical aspect of his Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree means that even though he doesn’t have a farming background, he isn’t missing out on anything.
“Not being from a farm myself, Lincoln University really appealed to me because of the solid practical base to the BAgSci. The degree is obviously quite science-based as well, but having the practical work combined with it was a major benefit for me,” he says.
Ashley says the farm visits as part of his degree are a great way to experience agricultural operations in the real world.
“Seeing how people run and adapt their farming practices to different areas and how the variety of production processes affect yields has been really beneficial. You can see the theory in action and understand its application much better,” he says.
He says he plans to decide on the type of agricultural career he wants a little later in his degree, but gaining on-farm work experience is his short-term goal.
Ashley, who is a recipient of both the Future Leaders and Dairy NZ scholarships, says Lincoln’s “top-class” sporting facilities also played a part in his decision to study there.
He plays rugby for the Lincoln University Merivale Club and is also a halls rep co-ordinator, providing support for students living on-campus.
“Lincoln is truly a great place to study,” he says. “It’s the type of place where you can have a great time and come away with an excellent qualification.”
