“Having access to Lincoln’s gym facilities, trainers and the High Performance Centre has meant I can develop my sporting talent alongside my Bachelor of Environmental Management,” she says.

Margot has been involved in hockey for about 12 years and currently plays for the Christchurch Avon Premiere Women’s team.

She hopes to use her degree from Lincoln to gain a voice in local government policy and planning.

“I would like to work in council policy and planning when I finish my degree, which means I can have a say in the planning process and be part of new developments and initiatives.”

With increased demand in the New Zealand industry for qualified urban and environmental planners, Margot says her degree will provide an excellent launching pad for her career.

“As development expands and people become more aware of impacts on the environment, there becomes a greater need for strategists to minimise and manage those impacts,” she says.

An interest in geography at high school motivated her to study a BEM, and she is enjoying building on and expanding that knowledge at Lincoln, she says.

“I find learning about the earth fascinating - what makes it up, the science behind its processes. I quite enjoyed physical geography while I was at high school, so a BEM seemed like a logical step for me.”

Margot enjoys the “community” lifestyle at Lincoln and says the atmosphere is open and welcoming.
