“I come from a rural background in Tamaranui and enjoyed studying chemistry in high school, so I felt that a BV&O degree at Lincoln would be a great way to combine those two things,” she says.

Leigh’s brother studied a Bachelor of Agriculture at Lincoln, and Leigh says everyone she talked to praised the university’s practical industry focus.

She loves being outdoors and wants to work amongst the grapevines, rather than in an office all day, she says.

“I would like to own my own vineyard one day and be involved in wine-making. I have fallen in love with the South Island since I’ve been at Lincoln, so it would be great to work in this part of the country.”

Leigh is enjoying the tutorials as part of her degree, saying they help to reinforce knowledge learned in lectures and offer an open environment for discussion with lecturers and other students.

Leigh says Lincoln’s “lovely” campus, in its peaceful rural setting, is a great place to study and relax. She plays netball and squash at Lincoln, and says having the recreation centre close by is perfect for popping over and getting in some exercise.

Leigh received the LA Alexander Scholarship grant towards her degree this year, and says he is already looking forward to her second-year studies and getting hands-on experience in wine-making.
