Noe Hayashi, English Language Short Course

Noe was surprised by how much support she had during her stay.

Noe was already deep into her studies at Chuo University in Japan when she decided to take on an international adventure.

She came to New Zealand to study a short four-week English programme at Lincoln University. She learned how to write essays, how to effectively read complex English, and honed her practical conversation skills.

“Everyone was able to be actively involved with the instructor in every class.”

Noe worked alongside students from all over Asia. Group activities developed into friendships and they would often go out together after class.

Despite her short stay, Noe had full access to all of Lincoln’s student facilities. She was able to use the gym and join in club activities, just like a full-time student.

“I was able to participate in clubs, which allowed me to get involved with local students, which was very satisfying. Classes finished early some days, so I had a lot of after-school activities.”

Noe was initially worried about what life with her homestay would be like, and if she would like the food. She was quickly made at ease and found her host family very accepting.

“The family had small children, so we sometimes played together in the garden after school.

“The meals were always homemade and freshly prepared with good nutritional balance. We were also treated to homemade sweets, which were very tasty.”

If she ever had problems, she felt comfortable speaking to staff members at the university about it.

“They gave me a lot of advice about homestay, school life, and even my personal life. Everyone was very friendly and gave me a lot of advice for my study abroad life.”
