Sookyung Kang, Study Abroad
Sookyung is the first student from the Republic of Korea to attend Lincoln University as part of the popular Study Abroad programme.
She says she loved Lincoln’s style of teaching, which was totally different from the approach at Duksung Women’s University, the institution she attends in her home country.
“I chose papers that included field trips because I wanted to know what a field trip involved. Experiencing real lessons from these trips helped me to understand the lectures easily. I really enjoyed them.”
She studies international trade at Duksung and decided to branch out into such Lincoln courses as wine-growing, New Zealand ecology and conservation, and history of design and culture.
“All the professors and tutorial teachers are great and teach from the student’s perspective. They use various tools, such as lab sessions and tutorial time, to help improve our understanding.”
Sookyung says making friends is easy at Lincoln.
“The Lincoln University Students’ Association (LUSA) hosts a lot of programmes and parties, such as Garden Party and a winter festival. LUSA also provides a buddy system, which helps students better adjust to life at the university.“
There are various ways to ask for assistance if you need it. My LUSA mentor was very helpful.
One of her most cherished memories involves travelling around New Zealand with other international students during the mid-semester break.
“It was amazing to experience the unknown and the truly unexpected,” she says. “It helped me adjust my expectations of what studying abroad offers me.”
She would recommend the programme to those wanting to step outside their comfort zone and enjoy experiences beyond their familiar surroundings.
“I have made a lot of new friends from all around the world,” she says. “I have not only improved my English but also learned how to be a better person.”
