Emergency Response

If an emergency occurs on campus, we have a range of different services that can help.

Who to contact in an emergency

  • In the event of a fire or other life-threatening situation, call 111 (emergency services).
  • If the emergency is not life-threatening, call Campus Security on 0800 545 388.
  • If the emergency is related to poisons, call the National Poison Centre at 0800 764 766.

Download the SAFELU app

We use an app called SAFELU to communicate information about emergencies and provide emergency response procedures, safety details and contacts.

Get it on GooglePlay or the App Store.

Emergency exits

If you are in a campus building during an emergency, leave the building through an emergency exit route. These are signposted and highlighted on displayed maps.

Smoke and fire control doors must be closed at all times, except when they open automatically during a fire alarm. (The doors are installed with electronic “hold open” devices, which release when a fire alarm is activated.)

In the event of an emergency or fire alarm, always use the stairs rather than the lift.

Building and floor wardens

All university buildings have wardens who are trained to evacuate people when necessary. During emergencies, they will be wearing fluorescent vests, marked with the word ‘Warden’.
