23 May 2013 Translocation – or moving animals to safer places – is a vital tool for saving species from extinction. Many factors influence the success of these new populations, including habitat quality, predators, capture and release techniques, the number and sex of individuals, and their genetic diversity. Now new research, the first of its kind, published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology suggests bird song could also be important.

The southern ladybird to be let loose on a potato crop
08 March 2013 In seven years, a tiny sap-sucking insect called the tomato-potato psyllid (TPP) has caused major damage in the potato industry in New Zealand. Research conducted by the Bio-Protection Research Centre at Lincoln University, using the southern ladybird as a biological control agent, has shown the predator to be voracious and effective at reducing TPP numbers on glasshouse potatoes. On Wednesday 13 March, the first batch of these potent predators will be released on an organic potato crop in Hororata, as research moves from the lab to the field.

03 September 2012 Black foot disease is a scourge of newly planted vineyards worldwide. The disease is caused by several species of Cylindrocarpon, a fungus present in some soils. It is a major cause of death in young grapevines and currently there is no known control. Because this disease kills young vines it has the potential to cause significant economic loss to the New Zealand wine industry as diseased vines and inoculum must be removed or a new site sought.
