Lincoln University launches new podcast From the Ground Up

28 August 2025 | News

Lincoln University is entering the podcast space with the launch of "From the Ground Up." It’s a brand-new series showcasing the research and real-life stories of our postgraduate students.

Hosted by lecturer and PhD candidate Hiraina Tangiora, the limited-season podcast goes behind the scenes of groundbreaking projects impacting the future of both local and international industries.

Each episode brings listeners into a personal setting with researchers. You'll learn not just what they're working on, but the how and why behind it too. It’s the first time Lincoln has shared its students’ stories in this way.

The first two episodes drop today, Thursday, 28th August, with new episodes released weekly.

Our researchers dive into topics across all land-based sectors. You’ll hear about how food waste can be repurposed to solve problems in the ag industry and discover how changes to surf spots can greatly affect communities. We also delve into how native insects fit into our ecosystem and can be protected, along with other issues that Lincoln is researching.

Lincoln University Marketing Manager Sarah Caseley says From the Ground Up offers a new perspective on the impact postgraduate students are making.

“It’s a chance to hear the real student stories behind the research. Not just the findings, but why they're passionate about it and the challenges they face.”

In the opening episodes, we explore how PhD student Nicole Spriggs' research could make rugby safer for young women. In episode two, researcher and lecturer Dan Smith unpacks the rural contractor economy, shining light on an under-researched but vital part of agribusiness.

Listeners can tune in on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, or via the From the Ground Up webpage, where full bios, transcripts and video versions are also available.
