Sport and Healthy Living Initiative boosts fun and fitness on campus

Battling it out in pickleball, sinking shots in social netball, and even scaling bouldering walls – these are just some of the activities thriving at Lincoln thanks to the Sport and Healthy Living Initiative.
Supported by Rabobank (Rabo Community Fund), Scales, ANZCO, Canon, former Chancellor Tony Hall and family, and an anonymous supporter, the initiative is all about creating opportunities that enhance student wellbeing and bring people together through sport.
Since launching in 2022, the initiative has funded everything from swimming access to climbing shoes and support for social sport staff.
Lincoln’s Sport Co-Ordinator, Kathy Baxendale, has seen the positive impact firsthand.
“Many students have enjoyed trying a new sport, connecting, getting active and being social - all without the barrier of cost.
“It’s great to see all the gear in use and the smiles on their faces, along with the variety of people that come along. These sports are available and accessible for all.”
Lincoln student Ashton Robinson, President of the LU Racket Club, recently organised an event utilising the funded gear to play badminton, pickleball and table tennis. Ashton said the uptake in participation had been amazing.
“There’s been a significant positive impact on our club, allowing us to provide equipment to those who previously faced barriers to participating in racket sports.
“I’ve seen how this initiative has created greater inclusivity, allowing everyone in attendance to enjoy socialising through sport and promoting active, healthy lifestyles.”
One of the standout successes has been swimming. The initiative has funded pool entries at Selwyn Aquatic Centre, bringing a new, inclusive sport into play that also boosts relaxation and wellness.
Waiting in the wings to join all the funded fun is a stack of colourful frisbee golf sets.
Kathy said they were really excited about the new addition on campus.
“The plan is to get the catchers in the ground over the next couple of months, and then everyone can enjoy the long summer days and get throwing!”
With the ongoing backing from the generous supporters, the initiative is set to keep adding to the campus’s lively sporting scene.
The next round of funding applications is open till October 31. If you’ve got an idea for a new activity or want to expand on an existing one, now’s the time to get involved!
