Mahika Kai

Course overview

You’ll be given an overview of traditional and contemporary mahika kai theory, custom and practice.

The main aims of this course are:

  1. To introduce students to mahika kai, including its historical and contemporary content in te ao Māori. Students will learn about traditional, practical and innovative elements of mahika kai.
  2. To develop an understanding and apply Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge systems) through Mahika Kai practices, using a Mahika Kai calendar to explore how people care for and use natural resources.

After successfully completing this course, you’ll be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the key elements of the mahika kai calendar.
  2. Explain key developments and adaptations in historical and contemporary mahika kai.
  3. Evaluate impacts on mahika kai practices from the surrounding environment.
  4. Compare and contrast the use of the mahika kai calendar in different spaces and places.
  5. Apply under supervision practical elements of mahika kai.
