Banks Peninsula Ecological Restoration Scholarship

The Banks Peninsula Ecological Restoration Scholarship was established in 2025 to support a Lincoln University postgraduate student with an interest in ecological restoration on Banks Peninsula.

Living Streams Community Nursery (the sponsor) is a volunteer, eco-sourced native plant nursery in Little River, working to “Green the Peninsula.”

Founded over a decade ago by local environmentalist Annelies Pekelharing, the nursery began with community seed collection and riparian planting along the Okana River. Since becoming a Charitable Trust in 2017, it has grown behind the Little River Library, with volunteers meeting weekly to propagate native plants from seeds sourced in the Herbert and Akaroa ecological zones.

To further support native regeneration and conservation on Banks Peninsula, Living Streams Community Nursery is offering scholarships for Lincoln University students. Successful recipients will be further supported by introductions to Peninsula conservation groups – allowing for opportunities for local experience, work, study or research.

Up to two $5,000 scholarships (at the discretion of the selection committee) will be offered annually to full-time postgraduate students with a research project (existing or proposed) on ecological restoration on Banks Peninsula.
