Three Lincoln University students are set to make their mark on Aotearoa’s primary industries after receiving the Government’s On Farm Support Science Scholarships.
Georgia Higinbottom, Ashton Robinson and Henry Bartrum were among six recipients of the nationwide scholarships. Valued at $5,000 each, the scholarships support students pursuing careers in agricultural science, commerce, and other areas vital to the food and fibre sector.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Associate Agriculture Minister Andrew Hoggard announced the recipients as part of their commitment to boost on-the-ground support for farmers and growers.
“The Scholarships help build a knowledgeable advisory sector ready to provide practical, specialised support to our primary industries,” McClay said.
Minister Hoggard said, “These impressive scholarship recipients represent the future of primary industry advisory services, and they’ll play a key role in helping our food and fibre sector thrive.”
For the Lincoln University trio, the funding provides not only financial relief but also unique opportunities to deepen their knowledge and connections within the agricultural sector.
Growing up on a sheep and beef farm in the Wairarapa, Georgia Higinbottom developed a strong connection to the primary industries, which she is now building upon through her Bachelor of Agricultural Science studies at Lincoln.
She described receiving the scholarship as a “thrilling” step towards her career goals.
“It’s a great opportunity to make more connections within the primary sector, and I’m looking forward to the mentoring and development opportunities.
“Coming to Lincoln and continuing to grow my passion and knowledge of our agricultural sector has genuinely been one of the best choices I’ve ever made.”
The financial support will help Georgia make the most of her studies and university life, including her active involvement with the Lincoln Young Farmers Club.
Ashton Robinson, also studying for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and part of the Future Leaders Programme, was equally excited and grateful.
“It felt amazing to know I’d been given a chance to deepen my understanding of the agricultural sector by learning directly from industry professionals.
“This scholarship not only recognises my passion for the industry but has also motivated me to work even harder toward my goals of contributing to sustainable farming in New Zealand.”
Ashton plans to use the scholarship to enhance his leadership skills and seize more of the incredible opportunities offered by Lincoln University and the agricultural sector, including exchange programmes that align with his goal of exploring international agricultural systems.
Henry Bartrum, who holds Lincoln Diplomas with Distinction in Agriculture and Farm Management, is now pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture. As an experienced shepherd, his hands-on experience makes him a valuable contributor to the future of the primary sector.
The scholarships awarded to our students exemplify Lincoln University’s reputation for nurturing leaders in agriculture, underscoring our mission to support the growth and innovation of New Zealand’s food and fibre industries.
Congratulations to Georgia, Ashton, and Henry for this recognition, which reflects their dedication to the sector and their potential to shape its future.
