Monika Hoi Tung Chiu, Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Food Science)

Hong Kong’s Monika Hoi Tung Chiu came to Lincoln to study for a Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Food Science Major) because she wanted to help people achieve “optimal health”

She already had a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical studies in Hong Kong and had been working in a pharmaceutical company for several years, but made the switch to follow her interest in food and health.

“I believe food is a crucial factor of overall health being,” she said. “Also, I had a dream to study overseas and finally I chose New Zealand to do my further study because I like the environment and peace here.”

She found some challenges in her study but with the help of Lincoln staff and students was able to overcome them. “As a mature student, I was having a hard time picking up the study life because food science is totally new to me.

“Thankfully, every professor, lecturer and even PhD students were very kind and helpful, which supported me a lot on my study. The student support services and workshops in the library helped me a lot as well, from improving my language skills, to growing my writing skills.”

She enjoyed the programme’s field trips, visiting, among others, Oceania Dairy, ESR and Hills Laboratory, each giving her a sense of how industry operates. Laboratories also provided many opportunities for hands-on experience. Each lab class has an experienced tutor and PhD student, and I learned a lot from them.”

She found the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme useful.
“EAP not only helped me boost my English level in a short time, but also help me integrate with the new environment. I especially appreciate the research skill class in EAP. It not only improved my reading and writing skills, but also equipped me for future study.”

Her studies led to work in the food industry.
“I was working as a part-time scientific writer when was studying. I was quite surprised to find a part-time job that could match my professional skills and fit my study time. I found it on the job website for students from LU. “That part-time work experience not only allowed me to gain work experience in New Zealand, but also brought me a full-time job. My employer appreciated my work performance and offered me a position right after I graduated.I’ve been working there as a food technologist for six months now.”

“I am so grateful that I chose Lincoln University to further my study,” she said.
