Nicola Wei, Bachelor of Science (Food Science)

Nicola used to stare at the snow on the mountains from the science lab window on the sixth floor of Lincoln University’s Burns building

From China, she came to Lincoln to complete a Bachelor of Science, majoring in food science. “I came because I wanted to pursue study related to the food industry and Lincoln has a reputation for that. The other reason was the small class sizes which helped me get used to the new study environment easily. “

She had no idea what the mountains she stared at were called, but that did not stop her enjoying the sight of them. “It was the most fascinating view I have ever seen from a lab.”  However, she obviously did not spend all day looking out of the window. She went on to work at Plant & Food Research as a food microbiology technician and is now doing further study in Auckland.

“I liked the laboratory work during courses (at Lincoln). Not only did I get the chance to learn the science principle of making different kinds of food such as beer, kimchi, and bread, but also I was able to design and complete a science project. I got practical and useful skills out of the courses that I did which I think is important for me (to be able) to start a career in science.”

She described the Lincoln lecturers and staff as very friendly, patient and helpful. “They are easy to approach for questions. The facilities are nice and I like that everything is so close to each other, like the cafeteria, gym and computer rooms."

She also enjoyed the University accommodation, the Crescent. “I like that it is so close to campus and the price was affordable. I also made a very good friend there.” She said there were a lot of events held during the year which allowed her to expand her social circle.

Her most memorable moment, however,  was when she received her degree from the Chancellor. “I felt like it was a start of a new chapter."
