Paiqi Cao, Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology

First year Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology from China, Paiqi Cao, or Oscar, is following in his grandfather’s footsteps in his Lincoln study choice

“My grandfather used to work in a traditional Chinese winery,” he said.

He sees the degree as one of the best at Lincoln.

“I think I’ll enjoy working in the vineyard or winery, from planting grapes to making a bottle of wine will be a fantastic and exciting job.”

He started his study in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and has gone on to the Diploma in University Study (DUS) programme, which means he can study English as well as the prescribed degree courses.

“It helped me to fit into New Zealand, improve my English. The teachers there are very friendly, and that feeling is vital for me.”

He decided on Lincoln as New Zealand has a well-developed agriculture system, and said Lincoln University, as a land-based agriculture university was “very famous”.

“New Zealand is a lovely country, and Lincoln University has an excellent study environment. It is the right choice.

“The Lincoln environment is great for both for living and learning.

“Most of the courses are very good because I can learn a lot from them. For example, biology and chemistry labs are very useful and impressive, we need to do all the steps by ourselves, and we learn many things from doing.

“Lectures are excellent, sometimes still a bit fast for me, but if compare now with the early time I attended the lectures, it’s much better. The staff are outstanding- they are all willing to explain what I don’t understand, whatever the questions I asked.”

He said New Zealand is a perfect choice for study, and gave three reasons why; first, the environment, “which is so good, the air is always full of natural smell, sometimes
mixed with some farms smell, and I like it”.

Secondly the people.

“Sometimes I walk on the street, and there might have a stranger say hello to me, the people here are amicable.

“Thirdly the eight public university’s in New Zealand are all in the first 500 in QS World University Rankings, and many places around the world like to hire the students who graduate from those universities.”
