“During the trip, I visited local universities, went on field trips and engaged in a different culture, while developing an idea of a product that New Zealand could produce and market to South Korea,” he says.

Gregory, who’s set to be the Lincoln University Students’ Association President in 2021, wants to work in business, both locally and globally. He says he expects his degree to assist him in becoming part of a professional body that can take him around the world.

“I’m also interested in the social enterprise space and the course material will help me if I pursue entrepreneurship.”

The degree he has chosen particularly impresses him because of the combined accounting and finance components within the one major.

“I am interested in becoming a Chartered Accountant or a Chartered Financial Analyst and with this degree, I don’t have to decide until after I graduate,” he says. “I can learn two disciplines and then choose what I want to do once I am in the workplace.

“Lincoln has lots of choices, especially in the commerce area, including some majors that aren’t available at other universities.”

Gregory enjoys the practical skills that he’s learning as part of the programme, as they allows him to gain an understanding of what it will be like to work in the industry.

“The lectures are engaging us in blended learning, using in-class practical work and online education.

“I appreciate how the lecturers always have time to see us after class or if we pop in to see them in their offices. They knew my name from early on and I am always welcome to visit them for help or just a life chat.

“They have been very helpful in my journey of working out what I want to do in my professional life and showing me a pathway to get there.”

He cites the Bloomberg labs in the Lincoln University Commerce Building as especially useful resources from a finance perspective. 

“It’s a great opportunity to use the very same interface that thousands use every day to trade on the financial markets.”

Gregory says Lincoln has helped him to work out exactly what he wants to do with his life and how to get there.

“It has allowed me to develop the skills I need to help solve tomorrow’s problems.”
