Richard’s decision to attend Lincoln University was influenced by more than just its reputation. “I liked the campus and the smaller class sizes,” he shares. “There’s also a family connection to Lincoln, which made it feel like the right choice.”
His tertiary academic journey began at Lincoln with a Bachelor of Environmental Management and Planning, majoring in water science and technology and culminated in a Master of Environmental Policy and Management.
From a young age, Richard cared for the natural world. “I always had a broad interest in the environment,” he recalls. “In high school, I really enjoyed subjects like geography, which laid the foundation for my studies at Lincoln.”
This passion translated into a fulfilling academic experience, particularly through the hands-on learning opportunities Lincoln provided.
“Field trips were fun and offered valuable practical experience,” he says. Another key component of his education was the exposure to the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI). “That connection was incredibly helpful in preparing for the industry.”
“I feel lucky to have had such accessibility and expertise of lecturers, along with some great friends I still keep in touch with through my work,” he mentions.
Upon graduating, Richard’s career trajectory took off rapidly. “I was immediately employed at the Selwyn District Council, then after some time as a consultant, I returned to the Council and I'm now Team Leader of Resource Consents,” he says. The role allows him to engage with a range of impactful projects, balancing environmental considerations with development needs.
“In Selwyn, there’s a good mix of urban and rural areas, which keeps the work interesting,” he explains. His work involves travelling across the district, from Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora to the Port Hills, right the way through to Arthur’s Pass.
As Richard continues to shape the Selwyn District, especially with Rolleston’s rapid expansion, he remains very content in his role.
“It’s been a rewarding career path for me”, he says. “It’s always satisfying to see things go from on paper to being part of that built environment.”
